When did games stop being about fun?

Seriously.

Nowadays, anytime you play any game that isn't completely single player, it seems you're doing a job more than playing an actual game; people want to win, they want to prevail.  They don't want to play the game, they want a victory, like some sort of basement dwelling commander.

I remember a time that when games came out, you had fun.  Even when you lost, it just made you want to win more.  You actually enjoyed it, and immersed into it.  The didn't translate to multiplayer it seems; people look at games in numbers and statistics instead of entertainment value.  Their entertainment is victory; anything short, and they aren't happy.

Is our world so depressing that we can't even enjoy ourselves anymore without getting some sort of personal victory over someone else?

It's what I do in TF2. I don't care if I died countless times trying, still worth the laughs killing a sniper with a scout taunt! X3
Maybe that's why Minecraft is a success. While there's a "goal" to "win", most people don't even care. Second Life is kind of the same thing too, except it's technicly not a game (but has games inside of it).

"I love taking my time and exploring! That's why I love games like Skyrim and Fallout; so many things to find that you'd never see just beating it real fast! Everytime I play either one I find new things! :O (Eek)"
Have you heard there's an MMORPG trying to cover that too? It's called WildStar! (currently in closed beta tho)
