... That there's actually people out there who would rather see a game beat the same routine into the dirt until it becomes dull rather than see the risk of something new being done.

You see it a lot.  These people who play games mechanically - they have no love for the game itself, they just want a routine.  That routine is not to be disturbed.  That routine being threatened is bad, because it means their routine has to change.  Sure, they can adapt to the change, but they don't want to have to - why adapt when you can see things remain the same?

These are the 'Call of Duty' generation in my book.  Why care about story? Why care about characters? Why care about world? You're playing to have something to do.  You're playing to compete.  Any creativity put into any game is entirely wasted upon such people, because they don't care about it.  What they care about is an easy to understand routine.

These are the people who, once they get their hands on a game, want creativity to die.

Because creativity does not often get along with routine.

I am sadly, one of such kind. I have found that I'd turned all my gaming experience into a routine. Playing the same game over and over again, and I feel satisfied every time, although mindful of this stagnation.
But this is in fact a separate point. I do enjoy seeing innovation and creativity in new games. On the other hand, I see nothing wrong with competitive gaming.
