So, I got bored and was looking at TF2 stuff and maps again, and it all started cause I thought 'Hey, the Iron Curtain looks like tech they'd use in Equestria (most of their machines seem to be at least partially wooden, even if they act more high tech than that) Soo yeah. That then became a quest of making my own weapon ideas. Then it evolved back into 'who would be what' because... well... I had to fit the weapons with the users' personalities.
Then it struck me - Medieval Mode. Using some of the alternate names for classes from that, as well as some clever ideas on my end, I came to this. While reasons for most of the characters are much the same, here's a few things I added in...
- I wanted to give Fluttershy a sniper rifle called 'The Stare' and dress her in her Dangerous Mission outfit - with Angel dressed as the actual Sniper (I figured her Melee weapon would be Discord)
- Once more, Iron Curtain as a partially wooden weapon made for a good idea, so I gave Big Mac a similar minigun.
- I wanted to change some appearances - Rarity particularly. A mask does not suit her.
- I found out Pinkie's voice actress has a degree in Engineering. Now she REALLY breaks the forth wall!
- I wanted to give Rainbow Dash a Wonderbolts inspired outfit
- Muffin Launcher for Derpy. 'Nuff said.
- I tried to give each of them unique weapons and slightly altered designs, tho some of it sticks out more than others (especially Dash's bat. I got lazy and uninspired by that... shoulda worked with scattergun.)
Also, changed things up by making Applejack a Demomare, being the most physical class when wearing Demoknight gear. Also, apple cider drunk.
MEDIEVAL MODE NAMES OF WORTH:
For those unknowing, in Medieval Mode, if the chat changes aint disabled, classes maybe called other things. This is not a complete list, just a list of factors that aided in this stuff.
MEDIC - Wizard, Apothacary
SNIPER - Ranger, Beast Master, Woodsman
SPY - Cutpurse, Blackguard
SCOUT - Runner, Advance Guard
DEMOMAN - Paladin, Blades for Hire
ENGINEER - Smith, Smithy, Metal Worker
Thats all for now! I'm actually considering designing weapon set ideas for this particular lineup! Tell me what ya think?
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (C) Hasbro and Lauren Faust
TF2 (C) Valve
I really like how you put so much thought on which ponies would fit the classes the best. You did a great job in it, so applause to you.
To me, the whole 'Twilight as Sniper, Fluttershy as Medic' thing is a situation where the roles reversed work better; after all, Fluttershy is timid, and preferes to maintain her distance from conflict.
Ultimately, I consider the Meet the Medic video; I could not see Twilight Sparkle sitting behind a rock, staring in awe as Fluttershy pushed forward, turning an ally into an ubercharged death machine. I also couldn't see Fluttershy experimenting on their hearts either. It seemed too backwards.
Consider this; which do you think is Fluttershy's preferred environment? In a laboratory surrounded by high tech equipment, or in the wilderness with a bunch of animals? And no, the doves don't really count.
Basically, I had a few factors to decide;
Which class would each pony play if they were playing this game?
Which classes seem to mimic the ponies best in Medieval mode?
Which classes do not conflict with important aspects of the characters?
I considered important aspects; Twilight's brains, Fluttershy's shyness, Rarity's perceptiveness/grace, Rainbow's arrogance and need to win, Applejack's strength and patience, and Pinkie.... well, Pinkie could probably be any class, really. I weeded out concepts I felt lived short of the characters' potential (sniping is way too narrow for Twilight's smarts, Pinkie Pyro is too obvious, a southern accent an engineer does not make...) and I even questioned ones that work.
This was a fun project, really; I like to consider possibilities and new ideas, even if others don't really care for them.
Gray Mann: ??? (still kinda working that one out)
Saxton Hale: Iron Will
Miss Pauling: Cadence
When I made these matchups? I wanted to make SENSE. I wanted to negotiate the entirity of a pony's character as opposed to picking some trivial thing and sticking with it. Twilight is a scholar/magician. Fluttershy is shy. Pinkie uses gadgets and throws parties. Applejack is rough-and-tumble. Spike is a fire-breathing dragon.
So almost the entirity of the RED lineup, I do not care for.
BLU? I'da gone differently with a lot. Cheerilee seems to rely on the forced 'Intelligence-Sniper' concept, although in this case it might not be too off considering she isn't at the same level of weirdness that Twilight is. Might have to stew on that a bit. I don't much care for the Crusaders as Mercs - Spike feels forced enough as is (though he is a dragon so...) Demo-Berry... I'll let slide, if only because of her fan interpretation. I'd have picked Derpy before Dinky for the Pyro. Shining Armor strikes me more as Soldier/Demo material than Heavy (I'd have picked Donut Joe for that).
Them's my two cents.
I based my match-ups on skill and habbit. Applejack is not a 'constructor' character. She does not share the same tendencies of the engineer. She is a fighter, and relying on tools seems like something she'd find insulting. Characters that would be engineer before Applejack in my setups? Twilight Sparkle (smart, teleporters), Pinkie Pie (gadget user), Trixie (stage magician), Flim or Flam.
How does one equate to stereotypes in something where they are rare, also? Twilight Sparkle does not have an Australian accent. Big Mac doesn't have a russian one. Stereotypes are a dumb thing to play on in something where they are so short in supply.
I put more thought into this than that. In my mind, if you're going to do something, you put thought into it, not a passing glance.
As for the autism thing? Won't buy you sympathy from me; if you can debate, you can stand a rebuttle.
Under your own argument, NONE of the ponies would fit any of the classes, because NONE of them do exactly what their classes do. All AJ has in common with Engi is an accent; she's strong, he's squishy. He's smart, she thinks 1 pony + 100 trees is fancy mathematics. She sang while her family built a barn. She *CAN* fight though. The Demoman with his Demoknight build is one of the strongest melee combatants in game.
When it comes to guns? NONE of them match. Because far as we know guns may not exist in equestria. I judged by their skills as I saw put forth in Medieval Mode; in which the Engineer is nearly useless (a fact that almost won Fluttershy the role of Engi in my matchups)
And I hope not to sound mean, but I really, REALLY don't care how anyone else would cast it.
Plus, it wouldn't be quite as fun if it wasn't Derpy.
Also the Bazooka and making lots of explosions fits if you make it as a compensation for his tiny wings compared to the Scout/Sniper aka RD/shy who got pretty normal sized wings.
Also the soldier is a big and muscular class, not as much as the Heavy but that's the reason why Snowflake aka Soldier trains so much - to not lose to Big Mac aka Heavy when they do hoof wrestling.
Given that he's with the Wonderbolts who in the show seems to be a mix of show artists (stunt shows) and military (gets send out by Celestia to deal with a dragon problem in Ponyville) and he was with them and training hard just like the Soldier, he has a military background. Unlike Derpy who only likes Muffins, is a postbote and derped eyes.
Next would be the "rocket jump" - the trademark of the Soldier Class cause it's not a quick class! Exactly CAUSE Snowflake has tiny wings he is that class cause with his weapon (and some steel hoofshoes) he can jump higher and further in a "ten-seconds flat" way, much quicker then he could if he flew around like Derpy. Derpy has no mobility problem, she can fly around just normally and thus doesnt need Rocket jump at all unlike Snowflake. And if you say cause she has derped eyes she needs to be soldier then that makes zero sense. At least Snowflake's handicap with his tiny wings makes sense why he choses a big weapon which makes lots of boom, has a loud voice and is all military to appear tough plus with his weapon he can do cool stunts which he can't with his wings and he can KILL EVERYBODY WHO MAKES FUN OF HIM! YYYYYYEEEEEEEEAAAHHH!!!!!
Next is, just like with Derpy who is ALSO a blank slate and got tons of fanon stuff made for her like being Dinky's mom though we saw Golden Harvest more often and more close to Dinky than Derpy and Dinky in the show. Like when the Mane6 drive with the train to the Crystal Empire, Golden Harves and Dinky were on board and looked like they go to their holidays. Anyway back to just like Derpy, there are 100+ fanfics and many people with the opinion that Featherweight is Snowflakes little brother in other words there's fanon for Snowflake too. If you considers Derpy's fanon with Snowflake's fanon then Soldier fits Snowflake more than Derpy cause as Soldier he will train his little body to become a strong, tough and hardcore Soldier just like himself thus all the yelling, military training, etc. (though Featherweight just wanna be a journalist). Whereas Derpy is all about Muffins this and Muffins that. Not. Funny.
All that counted together Snowflake has tons more going for him to be TF2 Soldier whereas Derpy has 0 reasons for her going to be Soldier. Just for "it's funny cause she's Derpy" is no reason at all. I think Derpy was simply chosen cause she's Derpy and a fan-favorite which would get this picture/team up lots of up-votes/favorites, not cause she fits the Soldier role cause she simply doesn't fit it at all. In other words as long a Derpy is in it, People who had Twi in their head as Sniper will be less likely to go all batshit crazy cause they see adorable and sweet looking Derpy in Soldier outfit and go all daaawww.
Snowflake is barely a character, who has appeared in two episodes, and said but one word in one of them. Given he's said it enough that we can assume it's catch-phrase, it's not enough to build anything on. Derpy is by far a better known character, and definitely more beloved by fans.
The problem with matching based on personality is that concept is basically just trying to ponify the class, more or less. I wanted to turn the ponies into classes, not the other way around. I wanted to have FUN with this, and doing what you said, I would have basically had done Meet the Soldier; just with a lot less talking, and there's no fun in that.
If you want to have fun then that's your right. But I do remember that it was said you made those classes based on what feels right for the pony and not cause of what people decided ages ago like they did with Derpy aka AJ has to be engineer cause Accent and Twi to be Sniper cause being precise and polite or Shy Heavy cause funny (same reason you pull for Derpy being Soldier by the way).
And in most classes I agree with you as Twi make a great mad doctor or Shy a funnily polite and merciful (as merciful as you can be as sniper) sniper and ofc RD= Scout and Rarity=Spy are running basically themselves.
The only two I have beef with are Spike and Derpy for the same reasons you disliked AJ as Engineer made by fandom majority or Fluttershy being Heavy cause it's funny. And you used the same reasons for Spike and Derpy - Spike breathes fire thus Pyro, Derpy as Soldier = lolz, funny. The others makes sense those two just feel being..there. Or in Derpy's case being there cause she's well-known and well-loved and not cause she fits the Soldier class like with AJ being a drunk Demopony going on rampage or Twi being mad doc, etc.
But as you said, that's your thing, so don't take too much mind of my preferences.
Honestly, there's a lot of characters I would put as Soldier before him, had I not chosen Derpy; Gilda, Braeburn, Donut Joe, Vinyl Scratch, Thunderlane, and Prince Blueblood. There's just not enough to Snowflake beyond 'YEEEEEAH!' to work with, and there's no real fun to be had with him. Putting him in ANY class would be little more than a vanity project.
'a mask does not suit her'
That much is true, and I'm interested in the fact that you know about the 63rd TF2 Fanmade DLC models, one of which is a completed model of the Spy which looks remarkably similar to Rarity's uniform here. Not to mention that Youtubers have managed to make voicepacks for the Team in both Female (so-far consisting of the Spy www.youtube.com/watch?v=S24Tsi… and Scout to the best of my knowledge), and with Ponies.
